Background of the Study
Oncological emergencies are urgent, life-threatening conditions that arise as a direct consequence of cancer or cancer treatment. These emergencies can include complications such as superior vena cava syndrome, tumor lysis syndrome, or spinal cord compression, all of which require immediate and specialized care (Bray et al., 2023). Oncology nurses, who are at the frontline of patient care, must be adequately prepared to recognize and manage these emergencies effectively. The preparedness of oncology nurses in handling such critical situations directly impacts patient survival and recovery outcomes (Smith et al., 2024).
University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) serves as a key healthcare provider in Borno State, offering cancer care and treatment to a diverse patient population. However, the preparedness of oncology nurses to respond to oncological emergencies is critical in ensuring the safety and well-being of patients, particularly in resource-constrained settings. This study aims to investigate the level of preparedness of oncology nurses in handling oncological emergencies at UMTH and identify factors that may enhance their readiness.
Statement of the Problem
Oncology nurses at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital may face challenges in effectively managing oncological emergencies due to a lack of training, insufficient resources, or inadequate preparedness. Given the potential life-threatening nature of oncological emergencies, understanding the factors that contribute to the preparedness of oncology nurses is essential in improving patient care. This study seeks to assess the preparedness of oncology nurses at UMTH and identify ways to improve their competency in managing these critical situations.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of preparedness among oncology nurses in handling oncological emergencies at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
2. To identify the factors influencing oncology nurses' preparedness in managing oncological emergencies.
3. To recommend strategies for improving oncology nurses' preparedness in handling oncological emergencies.
Research Questions
1. How prepared are oncology nurses at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital to handle oncological emergencies?
2. What factors influence the preparedness of oncology nurses in managing oncological emergencies?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the preparedness of oncology nurses in handling oncological emergencies?
Research Hypotheses
1. Oncology nurses at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital have a moderate level of preparedness in handling oncological emergencies.
2. Factors such as training, experience, and institutional support positively influence the preparedness of oncology nurses in managing oncological emergencies.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on oncology nurses working at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported preparedness and variability in the level of exposure to oncological emergencies among nurses.
Definitions of Terms
